Introducing our new Pastry Chef, Peggy Fortino.

I can’t believe it. We are creating a new variety of pastries and food items just for you. I am so excited to have a local Gilroy baker/chef who will be showcasing her delectable, exquisite sweets and food items in our shop.

Peggy has a long history with cooking and baking. With a BA degree in Home Economics and History from San Jose State, she went on to teach Home Economics at South Valley Jr. High in Gilroy for over 30 years. Since retiring, she has been busy as the pastry chef at the Cedar House in Hollister and teaching Wine and Dessert pairing classes at Fortino Winery and catering events and taking numerous cooking and pastry classes at Tante Marie’s Cooking School in SF.

Last week we introduced a couple of Peggy’s delectables in my shop. She brought in a breakfast apple cake, as Karen, my manager, says, “To die for”. Made with fresh apples, dried apples and apple cider, we SOLD out. Also, she made the most beautiful and delectable Chocolate Sweetheart cakes: Dark Chocolate icing over chocolate cake with a creamy genache filling, topped with a decorative candy heart, wrapped in a pretty Valentine’s Day packaging. It’s great for gift giving, but some of us have not resisted opening them up and eating them right on the spot!

Just a note about Peggy’s style. She told me she had to go to SF to get butter. In my naiveté, I said, “Why so far, don’t we have butter, here”? She said, “...because I need a higher fat content for those pastries to make them right.” Peggy is truly a perfectionist. She uses ONLY THE highest quality and freshest ingredients.

WE NEED YOUR HELP. We will be trying many new items. All will be fresh made. Come in and see what’s new and tell us what you like. OR, tell us what you want to have. I will have a survey sheet in the store, or you can just drop me an email. If you want to see some different goodies in our shop, NOW is the time. Yes, we will be having FREE samples when available.

In these hard times, you need a TREAT. And this is it, right in Downtown Gilroy.

Yesterday Peggy brought in the most scrumptious mini-cupcakes, a moist, flavorful white cake with white chocolate buttercream frosting. 1-2 bites and you were in heaven. It was unbelievable.

    Hello Sue Shallit

I have Redwood Engineering in town so I used to come on Fridays and listen to the live bands. I wish that I could bring you more Friday evening customers. I enjoy your coffee and I enjoyed the good tunes.

    Thank you for believing.
